The Anafon Hydro Scheme is the most recent community venture in Abergwyngregyn. Water from the Anafon valley high in the Carneddau mountains is piped down the mountainside and used to power a generator before it is returned to the river. The scheme is owned and managed by Ynni Anafon Energy Cyf, a Community Benefit Society set up to build and run this community hydro project.
The scheme generates in excess of 900MWh of electricity annually, enough to supply electricity to 230 households, and will offset more than 19,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the first 40 years of its life. Revenue from the scheme is estimated to be about £200,000 per year, with the disposable profits used to fund charitable projects in Abergwyngregyn and the surrounding area. Further details on the charity set up to distribute the profits are given in the Section below on Dwr Anafon (hyperlink this)
Work on the construction of the hydro started in May 2015 and was completed by September. Commissioning and connection to the National Grid was completed by the end of November and generation started on 1st December 2015, a month earlier than the original target date.
Further information, and photographs of the construction are available on the Ynni Anafon Energy website.
